Life in the Monastery: The Religious

Life in the Monastery: The Monks and Nuns.
Daily life in a medieval monastery was highly structured. The monks followed a strict rule that governed their activities from morning to night.
Those monks spent a great deal of time praying, reading, working, and studying. They lived a life of poverty, celibacy, and obedience. These obligations also applied to the nuns in the convents.
These documents show that the monastic community was self-sufficient. The monks produced their own food, clothing, and other necessary goods. They were also active in manuscript production, agriculture, and other craft activities.
